Overview

India is the world's most populous democracy. Its strong growth rate and economic and social progress for much of the 1990s and early 2000s gave many nations hope that a country striving to lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty in a free society could achieve greater equity and inclusiveness. But it has taken many decades for India to reach this position. The slowdown of the last few years raises the issue once more of what it will take for India's government and business sector not to allow such an impressive economic performance to stagnate or roll back. The Turn of the Tortoise by T.N. Ninan - India's best-known business journalist - explores the paradox of a 'premature superpower' (as coined by Martin Wolf in Financial Times) that has grown from the 12th largest economy in 2008 to the 7th largest in 2015, even as its people are poorer than those in Laos and Sudan. Ninan assesses India's position as a natural counter-weight to China, though fundamentally different and overshadowed by it in an unequal military balance and in global influence. Finally, he looks at how the third-largest contributor to global economic growth remains troubled by slow economic reform and the poor standards of governance that make it a difficult place in which to do business. Ninan then considers the social, economic, and political forces that helped the rise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the risks of constitutional liberalism yielding space to an illiberal democracy. He looks at the double-edged role of some of its business conglomerates and what change can be expected in the coming years, and reviews India's stance and role in global trade and climate change negotiations, and calls for change.
